Two Poems

by Crozier Lathrop

Descendants of the Great Extinction

Let’s follow the oval pocket
To the end of our passage.

Just how many viruses
Could live
At the end of this sentence?

The inner ear–
Coiled, spiral, snail-shells
Of ancient animals,
Compose chalkbeds one-thousand feet deep:
Rippled Mississippi Delta Waves of the Marbled Brow.

For deep
In the bone
Of your skull
Lie sound sensors.

We are all descendants of the Great Extinction.

How does the body know all these things?

A Microphone is an Extension of the Speaker

A microphone
Is an extension
Of the speaker,

Said the speaker,
Through
The microphone,
Through
The speaker.

Inside and through

Speakers speak
Me
Speakers speak
You.
